Technical Manuals

Technical Manuals

I collect and sell technical manuals online. It is a bit of a hobby for me as well a business. I have always been interested in the way things work and that’s why I think I have such an interest in technical manuals.

I am also interested in trivia and believe it or not I learn a lot from the technical manuals I sell. Some of the technical manuals are older and give me a historical perspective on the years that they were written. Other technical manuals are new and I get to learn about new technology and machinery and all sorts of other things that help me to expand my mind.

Favorite technical manuals

1.    Technical Manual and Dictionary of Classical Ballet by Gail Grant, 1967

This is one of the technical manuals that have more of a historical flavor. It is in brilliant condition and while I am not an avid ballet fan my wife who is and had it looked at by my children’s ballet teacher says that this was one of the best ballet technical manuals and dictionaries of its time.
She said that it is perfect for either the teacher or the serious student and helps to learn all of the pronunciations, definitions and spellings of the ballet terminology. As well it also gives in depth descriptions of every ballet step.

2.    Star Trek The Next Generation Technical Manual by Rick Sternbach Okuda

This is one of the technical manuals that are more for fun than anything else. Released in 1991 it outlines in great detail the operation of the U.S.S. Enterprise, which is the spaceship on the famous TV show Star Trek.

I found it fascinating and felt that the minds behind this technical manuals information were very clever with the details that they created – and very thorough as well. This was an entertaining read.

3.    1967 American Motors Technical Service Manual, Rambler Rebel, Ambassador, Marlin

I love cars especially old cars so technical manuals for old cars are a special interest for me. This manual has obviously been used a lot but the pages are all intact. It shows all of the specifications for the Rambler Rebel and Ambassador Marlin and give s a great insight into the workings of the cars in the 1960’s – a lot different to these days.

This is one of the technical manuals in my collection that I will hold onto it actually used to be my grandfathers and I keep some pictures of him with his car with it – it is a great memory.

4.    War Department Technical Manual TM5-316 Airplane Crash Fire Fighting 1944

This war department tome is another of the technical manuals from my collection and unlike some technical manuals this old it is perfect condition. It gives the step-by-step procedures on what to do when fighting the fires from crashed airplanes.

I imagine their procedures are a bit more updated now and that they wouldn’t dream of doing some of the things that they recommended in these types of technical manuals but it gives an interesting insight into how they thought and the mechanics of the airplanes in the 1940’s.

5.    Aliens Colonial Marines Technical Manual, Lee Brimmicom

This was published in 1996 and is one of the unique technical manuals that publishes diagrams, technical schematics and plans for the United States Colonial Marine Corps. It outlines the organization and the equipment that was used and is of course a perfect gift for fans of “Aliens” and includes a hypothetical situation with issues on a planet known as LV-426.

This one I keep with my Star Trek technical manuals and is also a great read and gives more of an insight into the war mind than perhaps the writers originally intended.

6.    New US Army Booby Traps FM-531Technical Manual

This is one of the more obscure army technical manuals that I own as part of my technical manuals collection. It was published in 1965 and as the name suggests it documents procedures, techniques and the supplies that you need to make booby traps.

It tells you how to make them, use them, find them and disarm them I loved reading this, a lot of very interesting information and I learned a lot about booby traps that I never would have guessed. And the places that they put them and the way they make them is quite astonishing.

7. John Deere 4020 4010 4000 Tractor Service Technical Manual Repair Shop

Have you ever wanted to know how to service a 4000 series John Deere tractor well this is one of their best technical manuals and tells you everything you need to know to keep that tractor running.

This manual covers the description, operations, lubrication and periodic service, engine tune up and tractor adjustment, diesel fuel system and heaps more. Like I said everything you need to know to keep your tractor tuned up and running with optimal performance and fuel consumption.

8.  Ferrari 412 Complete Owners & Technical Manuals

Okay so I admit it I am a Ferrari owner want to be but the closest I will ever get to owning a Ferrari is the one of their technical manuals for the 412. I live the dream when I read the specifications on the engine and see the pictures of this car in the owner’s manual. Oh well a guy can always dream can’t he?
